We currently have custom templates for various Yealink models, each with their own templates. The previous admin set the template to use an old firmware version, so each time I would try to manually update the firmware of a phone, the template would reprovision with old firmware.

What is the best practice to break this relation and update all Yealink phone firmware in our environment with the LEAST amount of downtime? Would we have to delete and then recreate an extension to reprovision with a new template?

We currently don't have a working dev environment to test out new templates FYI.

Yes - you will have to attach each phone to a valid template.
  1. Download current templates
  2. Make necessary customizations (if required)
  3. Goto extension. Copy the MAC Address
  4. Delete the device
  5. Add new device - select correct template. Paste the MAC Address.
  6. Save
  7. Provision device

Or if you have an extra phone - get it setup - and rotate it in to a desk. Take old one off desk. update. rotate back in.

Should the template be tied to the firmware? So point new template to new firmware? What's best practice?

Don't point template to firmware. Not sure of the reasoning there.

Point ext to template. Done.

the best practise is to always run the latest supported firmware with the latest default template. This way you ensure compatibility between the firmware and the template
