I am often asked to change the ringtone for a particular call group. Currently from the phone settings menu 3cx allows you to change the default ringtone and the one for calls coming from queues. I carried out tests with wiresherk basically if the call is internal 3cx does not insert any alert-info if it is destined for a queue that is internal or external Aler-info=queue if the call is external Alert-indfo=external, at this point yes can differentiate calls between phones with a customized template

Unfortunately, there is no way in the system to do that, and like you mentioned custom template can be a workaround, but is not something we test.

I have some ideas for possible alternatives. While we may not be able to change the ring tone, there are other approaches to get people's attention including using multiple channels for notifications: phone (external ringer), email, SMS text, desktop popup, or busy-light flashes (external light on wall). All these channels CAN be done with custom code.

Changing the ringtone was a service available in most cases in "traditional" telephony which allows you on the fly without thinking too much to understand not only whether it is an internal or external call, but for example whether it is an intercom or a specific call group. With 3cx the distinction is only exclusively with the name of the queue to which the number or contact of the caller is placed before or after. The sound is actually much more direct.
