3CX PWA not sending Windows notifications if Desktop app was installed at some point

I've been looking into this issue for a couple of days, and have stumbled upon this 3CX forum post, this, and this post, and followed all the steps that they had to try and get this to work.

My issue is: on machines that have had the Desktop App installed previously aren't able to get Windows notifications from the PWA. We have 4 techs here that haven't reimaged their work computers in years, and have moved from multiple different version of the 3CX app throughout the years. No Windows notifications for 3CX happen on their computers, but for a newer tech that had his computer reimaged when he started about half a year ago, it has only had the PWA installed and his Windows notifications work flawlessly. I have reset my Chrome permissions and had the PWA prompt for notifications again, tried in Edge PWA, complete uninstall -> restart -> reinstall, installing the Desktop app and uninstalling all 3CX apps, and still cannot seem to get the notifications to show up.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

Firstly, do the users have "Accept PUSH notifications" on in their forwarding rules, as that is needed.

Best,
K.

Good morning K,

Thanks for your response. In my settings and the client that has reported the issue, we have "Accept PUSH notifications" turned on.

FWIW I don't have that problem. Just for kicks have you tried a new Windows user/profile?

In fact I sometimes get extra "end call" Chrome popups when I answer a call.

I thought push was for the mobile apps...?

Thanks for the response Steve. I saw your reply and thought a new Windows user would be a great test - I've ran into many other issues with different apps where it seems to be profile corruption so I might as well give it a shot. Created a new user, downloaded the PWA through Edge, allowed notifications, and no luck still.

Thought I might as well test this on a brand new computer with a fresh install of Windows 11 24H2, too. Installed the PWA through Edge, allowed notifications, but no luck.

To clarify in case anyone was wondering, it's the Windows toast notifications that we're looking to have pop up. They seem to work on another technician's computer here, but now that I've tried on a new profile and a fresh install of Windows without success, I'm running out of ideas to try.

Is this on a Windows domain? (thinking, group policy)

Both computers were not joined to a domain. However, I did find the fix - a bit of a random one too:

There is an option to "Enable PUSH notifications" on the "General" tab of the settings in the PWA app AS WELL as an option to "Enable PUSH notifications" under "Call Forwarding" on whichever status you use. Both must be enabled for the Windows toast notifications to come through.

This fix seems to have unintended consequences when using the PWA. As stated in my previous post, you have to have "Enable PUSH notifications" turned on in both General and Call Forwarding settings. This allows for the Windows toast notifications to come through, but this also means that the 3CX app on mobile devices will also ring if it's set up. For clients that just want the Windows toast notifications but not to have their mobile device ring, this may present an issue.

I believe for the apps you could disable their keep running in the background on the phone, so they are not themselves listening to Push. On Android that would be in 3CX App settings-> Advanced->Battery&Data->Switch on background data.

Essentially the Call forwarding setting is a Master switch and then the different client apps have their own about whether they are listening out for them.

Thanks for the tip, Kyriakos. Perhaps separate options could be added for Windows Toast notifications and mobile push notifications will be implemented in the future .
