Maybe a 911 Dialing Enhancement or if Others Have An Idea?

I wanted to see if anyone would think this would be a good 3cx enhancement in future or of some other way to do it within. Currently, we have like 80 buildings, multiple floors, etc. Our other PBX does 911 dialing as follows:
  1. Each location, floor, suite, section, etc has a pool of 911 DID’s with their address, etc setup instead of managing everyone’s individual DID for 911 location.
  2. When a user dials 911 from a location, the PBX has all the network subnets, and when the 911 call goes out it looks up that subnet and checks out a DID from that location. Example: If I am at 4400, the teleco gets some other DID as the caller id, which has the correct location for my building, floor, etc. The system knows 4400 dialed 911 and internally it marries my extension up with the 911 DID.
  3. If I get disconnected from the PSAP, the PSAP dials that 911 DID back and the PBX routes the call to my 4400 since it knows that I dialed 911 and it checked out the 911 DID to me.
In this manner, large orgs with many DID’s can manage 911 dialing via subnets. It is a way to do dynamic 911 dialing. If by some chance the subnet is not in the system then it goes out as the regular DID, it logs/alerts that there is no subnet configured for the 911 call (send email to pbx admins so can fix/add). I was thinking maybe just a 911 Subnet Dialing option on top of what is already there.

In 3cx, if the above is not done natively within I was thinking if could route the 911 call via a script and have the subnets and 911 DID’s in an external database. The system could do the logic and write to the DB. Then on Inbound, it just hits CFD script to lookup which number called 911 last so it can route to that extension.

Or if anyone else has ideas on doing something like this another way. Thanks in advance.

I encourage you to look at our 3CX Emergency Notifier. We already have a location service based on the user's IP address.

We support Hotdesk phones too.

And we are always looking for ways to improve our product. For example, there has been discussions about providing a campus police console where staff can monitor every active emergency call, with options to listen and barge into the call. We have also considered pushing alerts to signage throughout the campus, and automatically locking doors, etc. Let's talk:

We already have a feature-rich solution built specifically for 3CX. If you need more features, if you can describe your needs, we can build it!

Thanks. We would not want to manager every user's ip address. By subnet it easier to manage. Does yours have ability to do by subnet and then send a specific caller id out? Then if PSAP calls back the number how does it route to the user who dialed?

Absolutely! You can associate one or more subnets to a location, or range of IP addresses, or individual addresses, or a combination of all three. As a networking engineer for 40+ years, I couldn't agree with you more. But, we all understand that this means YOU have to setup your network so each "location" has it's own subnet/range, etc. The more fine-tuned your network, the more precise we can be about where the user is. At a minimum, each building should have it's own subnet/range. Even better would be that each floor in a building would have it's own subnet/range.

Getting PSAP call-backs routed to the correct user is a challenge, but should be possible. Obviously, we don't want to purchase a DID for each extension across the campus. One option would be, when we see an emergency number is dialed, we capture the extension that placed the call, and then have any calls received on the location's uniquely assigned DID, we route that to the person that placed the emergency call.

But what if 2 or more people call the emergency number simultaneously from the same location? That seems like a very plausible scenario. We know all the people who have called the emergency number, and from which location. We could do a first-out-first in approach. My assumption is the first person that dials an emergency number from a location is likely to be the first person to receive a call back. In the case where multiple people call from the same location, in addition to the first-out-first in check, we should also check which of extensions are available to take a call before we route the PSAP and route to the first available extension. We can talk about strategies for getting the call-backs to the correct extension.

I'm excited to talk because I think you already have some good ideas we can incorporate into our commercial emergency notification software. Let's chat: https://booking.voiptools.com
