Hi,

I have a group all in one location (same subnet) all on Grandstream GXP1780s. I have a paging group set up for them accessible with a custom speed dial blf.
Occasionally after they use the paging and hang up their phone it acts like the paging was put on hold or somehow disconnected from the phone but the page is still active. When that happens it ties up pretty much every phone in the group until I drop the call from the receptionist client.

Does anyone have any ideas what is happening or why and most importantly how to fix it?

For bonus points can you tell me how to reduce the delay after they hit the paging blf? It takes up to 10 seconds for the page to start. I mention this because I'm wondering if both issues are related.

Thanks,
Bronston

Hello @Bronston Hansen

How many extensions are in the same group and are you using multicast group or a paging group?
If you are familiar with wireshark you could run a capture and see if the paging is terminated properly or not and if the delay is with the PBX or somewhere in the network.

I find Paging Groups are good for about 10-15 phones at the most. After that there is a lot of overhead created opening a connection to every single phone.
Best bet is to use Multicast Paging instead... however, I have seen folks get transferred into Multicast paging and suddenly you hear "hello, hello" of the loudspeakers with no way to retrieve the call.

I see. Thanks for the info. It's 18 extensions and not multicast. From the sound of it that's what I need to do.
I'm working on putting a multicast group together now but I'm struggling to find the info I need, which probably means it doesn't exist.
For multicast to work the multicast IP has to be set up in each phone right?
I also see this in the grandstream guide "The range of multicast page address is 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255"
That of course isn't in my subnet so I'm a bit confused how that will work. AWS hosted 3CX with multiple sites, each with an SBC on their subnet. I configured a multicast paging group in 3CX but I don't understand how it's going to talk to anything. Does it broadcast from every SBC connected to 3CX? That's the only thing I can think of that would maybe work. Or should I be putting the SBC IP in the mc paging group?
And lastly I don't see any phone provisioning options for setting this up. That, at least in my mind, implies I will have to manually configure this on each phone. If that is correct then every time a phone is re-provisioned for whatever reason there goes all that configuration.

I'm I missing some information that could help clean this process up?

Hi,

Thanks for the direction on this. I worked out how to get it done. I'd been avoiding dealing with the templates manually but that was the only way I could work out to get this done. So I added the multicast settings and replaced the pbx paging blf with the multicast option, all of which had to be done in the template outside of the 3cx interface, provisioned the phones and everything looks good.

I guess the multicast options in 3CX are only useful if you have your server on your LAN?

Anyway, thanks again for the advise.

Bronston
