So I just installed new Fanvil X4U phones successfully, but afterwards I saw in the management console that there was an update to 3CX and that it was "release" so I updated to 16.0.1078.

Now the phones are listed in red, and after I tried to update the phone firmware from the "phones" page it won't provision at all. According to the list the remaining "red" phone has firmware

Fanvil X4U 2.2.1 2.2.11 Fanvil X4U FW: Maintenance release
but I don't know if I can update it.

Hi Oliver,

Tick the phones you want to upgrade, then click the firmware button on top, and then OK

Is this Fanvil provisioned via STUN?

Try giving the phone a reboot and try the rollout again.

Update: yes with the second phone I just pushed the update, and had a cup of coffee while I waited, everything is back to normal now.

Oddly enough that might be the answer. Currently one phone is still showing red and the other one is OK and reporting the newer firmware.

I'm not entirely sure which step actually fixed it, since the sequence was along the lines of:
Reboot phone - no improvement
Push firmware - phone no longer assigned to extension (maybe at this point I should have just left it alone? and waited overnight)
Try to reassign phone - still no, it won't associate with extension number
Go to bed - try again next morning
Next morning phone can't connect at all.
Attempt to factory reset - fail, instructions from web to switch on holding down "#" don't seem to work and factory reset from the menu not possible due to password
Wait a couple of minutes - phone reports it is "updating"
phone is now assigned to extension and working.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that none of that was relevant and the phone would have just auto-updated if I'd waited, but the other phone is still red so I think I need to do something but I'd rather wait till the user is out of the way

When you push the firmware, the phone has to de-register and reboot to install it.

It may appear in bold for a while and remain offline until this completes, so yes there is a little waiting involved until it comes back online and reports it new version.

Small feature request: in the event of a small firmware version mismatch could 3CX have a "yellow" warning stating update needed rather than going all "red alert" and putting up a big warning about unsupported hardware. I mean to my eyes it really was OTT.

The version number difference has no bearing on the support status by 3CX, nor the potential severity of any issues resolved by firmware update. Actually the very tiny firmware updates are often the most important from a security standpoint. The whole point of making it is to make the status very obvious that something needs to be addressed which it does obnoxiously well.

Hi Oliver,

Small firmware version mismatch = this is not a thing in the context of firmware revisions

You cannot gauge the changes the firmware includes based on the number alone, so the warning needs to remain as is.

It's the indication that you are no longer running on supported firmware. For example a "small version" mismatch on Snom models can result in the screen being entirely unreadable.

So if you see red, time to update.
