HI, this is a question for a new 3cx setup, running 3cx 8SC Pro 30-day-trial / latest - 20.0 Update 10 (Build 1694 Beta - AI 1.6.63
Half a dozen Grandstream GRP-2613 / latest FW 1.0.13.127 handsets

The call flow here is very straightforward, and kind of frustrating thing:

- I've got inbound call group defined so their "Office public DID Number" hits a ring group <> has 4 EXT (101,102,103,104) all concurrent ring members.
so any of these 4 handset can answer the inbound call when it rings concurrent on the handsets.
- initially I did no config on the ring tones at all. Then poked it a bit at request of end-users.
-Now I have the phones set to use "IP phone - customize Call and Queue ringtone" such that we have "systemRingTone" for both the "Default ring tone and the "queue ring tone"
-- drama point now I relaize, is that I think maybe "queue ring tone" has nothing to do with a ring group, ie, ring group is not a queue.
But.
Drama:
- if we call from EXT 101 to 102 > they have a ring tone they like
- if an outside world person phones the office DID > hits the ring group > then the handsets ring with a (different ring tone) which they do not like so much
- if we then hang up and call from one handset directly to the other - yay - the nice ring tone.

I can't tell if there is actually a place where we are allowed to change what ring tone is used for "ring group" calls
and if there is an easy way to tell it "please just use the same thing as the normal ring tone thank you"

I did search forum and found some disucssion about maybe tweak teamplates to try to achieve this end
I am not certain I believe this is the only path so wanted to sanity check that yes indeed, dig into templates, good luck etc.

any feedback is greatly apprecaited
thank you
Tim

When changing the ringtone of a phone for a specific queue, that ringtone will only play when a call is received to that queue and not a ring group. As you mentioned, ring groups are not the same as a queue, which is why this change does not apply and there is no option to change this.
What can be done is, instead of using a ring group, to use a queue with the ring-all strategy.

Hi @fortech

You should try creating a copy of the grandstream_grp template and modify this value:

Code:
<!-- Matching Incoming Caller ID. Matching Rule 1 -->
<!-- String -->
<P1488>external</P1488>

<!-- Matching Rule 1 Distinctive Ringtone -->
<!-- 0 - system ring tone, 1 - custom ring tone 1,
     2 - custom ring tone 2, 3 - custom ring tone 3,
     4 - silent. Default is 0. -->
<P1489>3</P1489>

Change it from ring tone 3 to whichever you like and test again.

<P1489>3</P1489>

to

<P1489>1</P1489>

for ring tone 1 for example.

Hi, thank you for this guidance on template edit. I think I tried to do this but I am pretty sure not the correct place.
As a sanity check - once I make a config adjust to the template; I then need to re-provision to all the handset
and then after that I may test <> expect to get ~desired ringtone on the (inbound ring group calls)

thank you!

(I will followup to the thread tomorrow once this is tested)

Footnote, I was able to talk to someone in the office with physical access, so I did some testing.
-- I do realize that to deploy the new template on a phone already that was setup, I believe the only way is to (Delete) the phone after first recording his MAC address
-- then on the EXT I want it to be linked <> ADD hte phone <> designate the MAC <> and then designate my new-custom template file.
-- after doing this I was able to make changes. But. It appers to be harder to figure out what I want - than I had expected.

the stock template had the value >
<P1489>3</P1489>

and I changed this to be
<P1489>1</P1489>
and that was my only change to the custom template.
Then I deployed that to one handset. Power-cycled-Rebooted the phone to get it to pull new template
after that it apparently was worse than before - it had a kind of voice announcement saying there was inbound call coming.

So next, I adjusted template again, changed
<P1489>1</P1489>
to be instead
<P1489>0</P1489>

delete, re-add the phone with new template, power-cycle-reboot phone to re-provision.
endgame > the people in the office tell me my test call has the same ring as old stock setting (3)
so either 0 and 3 are nearly identical, or they are in fact identical

according to the template default, I have these options to pick from:
<!-- 0 - system ring tone, 1 - custom ring tone 1, 2 - custom ring tone 2, 3 - custom ring tone 3, 4 - silent. Default is 0. -->
so I guess I can methodically try the remaining thing - which is basically option 2
and see how that goes

the people in the office ran out of patience for testing tonight so I park the topic for now.
this is a bit messier than I thought.

I also had a separate attempt at doing this, by configuring a "QUEUE" not a "ring Group"
and that also appeared to fail, ie, after flipping over to QUEUE config
then inbound calls from external > continue to have unwanted behaviour. (ie, different unwanted ring for external, vs nicer ring for internal)

So. Pulling hair out a bit. Will take a break.

If anyone reading this far spots an obvious "ah, there is the mistake" please feel free to let me know

thank you
Tim

Followup note, I realize that my testing yesterday was confounded in part because my config change with queue ring tone preference - I thought was setting managed purely from server side, but I think a re-provision of handset was needed to push those changes out to the phones involved. So .. I am re-doing this testing and will followup to thread, if I can just fix this via the Queue <> set queue to use "system default" instead of "RingTone3" then that should be fine. Even though in this case I prefer how a ring group works over a queue. Just want to get it working. Sigh.

If I were you, i'd update to the latest beta in 3CX as you're able to swap out phone templates with the click of a button and then you can reprovision.

You may want to set up a phone inhouse and test so you're not irritating your customer.
