Raspberry Pi 4 issue

For those of you wanting to be one of the first to jump on the Raspberry Pi 4 bandwagon for use with 3CX, you may want to read this article.

It seem a resistor was left off the initial batch, which may, or may not affect you, but it might be worth waiting for the next (corrected) release.

Currently we do not support Raspberry Pi 4 at all, it's running Debian Buster, whereas 3CX only runs on Stretch (for the time being).

Yes, I'm aware, but some people like to be the "first on the block" with the new toy. As it has come up a number of times in the forum, I thought I'd bring this to the attention of those thinking about a purchase.

I think these Pi's with 3CX are totally awesome little devices. Now that 3CX have integrated the SBCs in to the PBX, the system just gets better and better. I'm just about to put in a PBX on a Pi and it's got a cool little case with heat sink and fan and it just blows my mind how you can get so much on something so inexpensive when a few years back we were flogging these crappy ISDN systems running server 2003 which cost thousands in hardware and licensing.

In fairness, the resistor issue is being pretty overblown for this device. I'm not sure why someone would use a high-power laptop charger or a fancy e-marked cable for a Raspberry Pi - something that is generally for a notebook/high draw device - when an $8 charger will do just fine.

It's not a technical longevity flaw, or a problem where it will burn out faster, or some other issue.

I understand it is a tinkerers device, but the technical writing community is really making a big stink over this to sell some clicks... It's a $35 open-board computer that has no industrial-level rating, so anybody using this for SBC on a Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 should be going into this knowing that they are not getting 5-nines out of this thing over a 5-10 year period.

Can it run MIRTH for medical HL7 messaging? Should you in production? No.

From what I can tell though, it runs the SBC fine in a test environment. I edited the bash script to trick it to install on Buster on a Pi 4 without a concern.

I wouldn't do this on a production system or client, but it was interesting nonetheless.

Shouldn't really be a concern here. 3CX uses X amount of processing power which doesn't change just by moving from a Pi 3 to a Pi 4. Now if you try to push it more because it has more cores but otherwise everything you do today on a Pi 3 will work just find on a Pi 4 with no heat issues.

how long do we need to stay tuned for? I purchased a pi 4 with out checking first if it was supported :-( might have to go get a pi 3b+ now for the customer it is for as will be installing it very soon.

3cx will not release any eta,

oh well, i will have a go at installing it this weekend on the pi 4 and see what happens. can go get a pi 3 next week if i have to.

Just out of curiosity. Are any of you cooling your Pi with at least a heatsink or a heatsink+fan combo? Or do you find no need for it?

We use heatsinks on all Pi on all deployments. It comes in the kit that we purchase (Canakit). Pi 3 has 2 heatsinks and Pi 4 has 3 heatsinks.

Just the basic adhesive backed ones. Have not had the need for the huge case sized heatsinks or any fans yet.

for and sbc i have not bothered with a fan but i did put the heat sinks in. if its running 3cx pbx then i have put heat-sinks and a fan just to be on the safe side.

So any time frames at all for when the pi 4 will be an option?

Not yet, it will take some time to perform all the necessary tests. We will inform you via a news post when it becomes supported of course
