Solved Recommendations to Upgrade 3CX 15.5 to V16 on Google Cloud

Hi everyone.

I'm planing to upgrade tomorrow 3CX PBX 15.5 to V16. (Our vm is on debian-8-jessie, we don't keep recordings, only phone calls and conference phone calls). The phones used are Cisco SPA502G firmware 7.6.1 and Yealink SIP-T23G firmware 44.83.0.20 )

I'm planing to do the following steps:

1- I will take a full snapshot of the vm on google cloud before the update. (restore to snapshot if something goes wrong)

2- Take a fresh backup of 3CX as well. (my daily backups looks like this, I guess everything I need is in there 3CXScheduledBackup.1.zip 06/25/2020 2:30:02 AM 581.93 MB 15.5.10244.4)

2- I will run the following commands on google cloud console: sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get upgrade

3- I will run again the following commands on google cloud console: sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get upgrade

4- I guess V 16 will be fully upgraded at this point. Is that right? Or do I have to run the initial installer afterwards then restore?

I guess all the greetings etc, will be imported at this point. I will push to re provision the phones afterwards.

you should scratch completely your VM as debian 8 is deprecated no more 3cx supported.
Then do a new fresh V16 install using pbxexpress and choose to restore your backup during install

Are your phones used behind SBC or in STUN mode ?
Do you use a 3CX FQDN or your own ?

The remote location that is using the yealink phones are connected via stun mode over the wan.
The other 2 locations that use the cisco phones have a vpn on each firewall to google cloud for those cisco phones.
We have our own FQDN. Everything is working like a charm so far.

So, do you mean, go to google market place and lunch the 3CX to create a new virtual machine with either debian 9 or 10 and then restore the backup to that vm?

If not, how do I scratch the same vm with the latest debian? All my routes etc and trunk providers are pointing to that vm.

Routes/trunks don't point to a 'vm'. They are either registration-based and will go to whatever instance registers or they are IP based and will go to the IP which can be attached to any VM. But yes starting fresh is the recommended path. The 3CX script to upgrade from Debian 8 to Debian 9 mostly worked but a fresh install would be better. You can make do the snapshopt + 3CX backup, or just shutdown the existing image + 3CX backup. Spin up a new VM from the marketplace and attach the previous internal and external IP to the new image. Restore your backup and you should be good. Once everything is tested you can delete the old instance.
 
Thanks for your response, that is a great idea, I did not know that you could set the same internal and public ip to point to that second vm. Which version of debian should I use for the new vm? 9 or 10.

With my personal google account I setup myself with google cloud free credit to replicate this case.

-I created a free 3cx from the martketplae, did a couple of extensions, took a backup of 3cx.
-Stopped the vm.
-Created a new 3cx from matket place again, it did not gave me the option to specify the insternal static or public ip.
-When it finished, it created a new public and private static ip.
-During the restore I entered FQDN from the other console at the end I could not access the vm.

This could be a problem for my existing vpn I guess.
 
Is there script to upgrade debian 8 to 9?
 
You could try stopping the VM after creating it, then disconnecting (don't remove) the public IP from the first instance and point it to the second and then remove/change the internal IP from the first instance and put it on the second and then start it again.
 
And I would do this immediately after creating it, not after restoring it.

Thanks, I will take the snapshot and backup from 3cx, then I will try the upgrades, I not will do the first option.
 
pbxepress can create a fresh debian 9 pbx instance giving you access to restore your full backup during install

Thanks for your recommendation, I turned off the old debian8, created new vm 3CX instance from marketplace, restored from backup and everything went well, thanks again.
 
For some since prev. version when I add a new Cisco phone says as follows:

Cisco (Custom Template) SPA504G 7.6.1 4432
Cisco SPA502G 7.6.1 4433
How do I fix this Custom Template to looks like the the one above.

OS and VM
============
I would not recommend upgrading your Debian 8 to Debian 9 at this point.

You should take your backup off of the machine, shut down the old VM and use PBX Express.

Once it is up and running, if you find that the FQDN will not work until enough time has passed for the old DNS entries to expire (will take at least 10 mins) and you might have to flush your DNS cache on your pc if it takes longer. Just wait for it.



Phones
======
Follow this link to update your Yealink phones to the minimum required FW

Then, you can update them going forward from the V16 dashboard

As for the Cisco, they were not cloud compatible before either, so you will have to figure those out the same as you did before or better yet consider newer (yet affordable) models to replace them with as those are not ever going to support the full 3CX feature set. Limitations can be see here

Thanks, I did that last Saturday and everything worked like a charm. The Yealink phones pickup the configurations settings automatically via STUN.
The cisco phones I changed the provisioning to the new ip and they are working great as well, they get connected via vpn.
