Hey guys at 3CX,

I would like to know if there is a changelog of trunk providers templates?

I see that VoiceMeUp (Canada) is updated frequently but only the IP Based template, not the Register one. Is there a way to know what's changed?

I also want to know if it is better using IP based or registration based trunk?

Hello @Frederick Marcoux

Please note that there is no change log for changes in provider templates. The templates are updated if a provider makes a change and we need to adjust to that change through the template.
The latest update for VoiceMeUp has the IP of the provider hard-coded in the template. So if you already have your trunk set up you do not need to apply any changes.

I also want to know if it is better using IP based or registration based trunk?
Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages that depend on your setup. If you go through the VoiceMeUp guide you will see an example of a reason that would lead you to choose one over the other https://www.3cx.com/docs/voicemeup-canadian-sip-trunk/

Basically:

An IP authenticated trunk requires the provider to log your public IP their end, and for you to configure yours through your firewall at your end. This I would say is good for security as you only allow through connections from your providers public IP (unless someone gets hold of it and spoofs it). I would also say it is not very flexible as you are set to that IP address only, what if you wanted to move location or you public IP changed (I have known it, even on circuits where the IP was meant to be static).

Note: In the 3CX interface with an IP based authenticated trunk the registration will show green despite if it is working or not, not registration takes place you see.

Registration based trunk: Uses a username and password to "register" and does show red on the trunk if not registered. These trunks are not set to a specific IP address so offer more flexibility but be careful who you give the username and password out to.

Thank you. I was wondering why the template was suddenly updated a few times recently.

Thanks for the complete answer! As my PBX is hosted with a static IP, I changed my trunk to IP Based.

What I was wondering is: because there is no registration, do incoming calls get connected faster?

I've setup both types of trunks before and to be honest I've never noticed a difference but I can see why you would ask the question.

No registration has nothing to do with calls connecting faster, nothing that is noticeable anyways. The provider will send the same invite regardless of the authentication type. When the trunk is registration based then an extra SIP message might be required on outbound calls but under normal circumstances this will never be noticeable.
