Static IPs on phones

I need to make sure that my yealink t46g and t46s have static private IPs and use of a vlan tag.
Does anyone know documentation on this and will try at setting be affected on firmware updates?

Not sure why you want the phones on static IP - if required configure static reservations on your dhcp server

You can reset the phones, assign a static IP, then paste the provisioning URL so they will auto provision.

Our template does not overwrite that value


I think its easier to do with static DHCP reservation though, because it makes it easier to reset and reprovision your phones in the future, and you only need to assign the reservations once per device.

This seems like the network admins responsibility then no? DHCP reservation is the way to go, and keeps the network admin in control of things.

For the partners here that did many voip installations in businesses, how often do you manually set a static IP on every phone you deploy?

Neither. Phones are DHCP. Their IP does not matter, ever. With Yealink, you can use DHCP option 132 to provide a VLAN tag to the phones. Polycom has 4 other options. Each vendor has another option that can provide the VLAN to the device.

Hundreds of thousands of phones this way with no issues.

This is a matter of network management so it's up to you. And there is some flexibility to cater for multiple environments (like the VLAN options mentioned above). Our template includes these additional options:


Generally speaking, for LAN or SBC style installations you can go with DHCP and you should be fine.

For STUN phones you should go with static because you also need to port forward those phones and a static IP will ensure the port forwards remain active for the specific IP.

You should always test in your staging environment before you deploy until gain enough experience and understanding of what to look out for, and get to know your phones better.

I'd only use static if phones were STUN or I had OCD.
