Upgrade v12 to v16 and move from Windows to Linux

I am looking for some help and direction on upgrading 3CX.

We are currently on version 12 SP6 Pro and need to upgrade to the current version STAT. We are also looking to switch from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Linux 9 and have set up a VM running the Debian downloaded from 3CX. I am wondering if I can restore the backup I have of the v12 config to the Linux VM? If not, do I have to go through the upgrade on a Windows server and then migrate to Linux? or would I be better off setting it up as a new install in Linux?

You will have to upgrade to 16 before the move to Linux. You're not the first one....

You cannot. You need to go through all the versions step by step.


Backups from previous versions can only be restored during the PBX installation.

To restore installs below version 14 follow this conversion path:

• v12 SP 6.1: upgrade to v12.5, then to v14 SP3. Download V12.5 here.
• v12.5 SP2: upgrade to v14 SP3. Download V14 here.
• v14 SP3: upgrade to v15.5 directly.
• v15.5: upgrade to v16 directly.

depending on how many extensions/trunks / did you have, I recommend starting from scratch.

Thank you all for the information. That's what I figured that the upgrade steps would need to be done on Windows.

Not sure how much work it would be to start from scratch, we have about 100 extensions and 3 SIP trunks but I am not very familiar with PBX servers so this is new to me.

Yes, I tried to go through the training this year when it was live, signed up for all the webinars, and then Covid hit and I had to use all my time to help get 50+ users ready to work from home when it was new to almost everyone.

Sounds like you might be better off engaging a partner for this project. There are several active in this forum (myself included) , and there is a partner search tool on the main web page if you prefer someone local to you.
