v18 Upgrade

Since we are now in production - I'm paying a lot more attention to 3CX upgrades. Are there any particular gotchas that people have run into when upgrading to v18?

I do have a custom template on our Yealink Phones - that I know I would have to rebuild. Its one simple line to remove DND button. I do have a number of CFD apps - so I wonder how those carry over to the new version.

You will have to update your custom template with the new one, and redo the change for DND. Copy and paste should work, allowing to edit without re-adding every single phone with the new template.

I do have a number of CFD apps - so I wonder how those carry over to the new version.

Those should still be there, as long as they are build using the latest CFD Designer. Older apps might not work since a few changes in V16 U8.

Well, it's an Alpha. Not ready yet for production. It is extremely stable, but I wouldn't recommend using it on a production system.

One big gotcha: the Webclient is extremely different, so keep that in mind.

V18 is still in Apha , and should not be used in a production environment

As for CFD , sometimes the version that runs with the latest version is released at a later date after the 3CX system is released

I didn't know it is still in Alpha - we won't upgrade then. Everyone that has been using the v16 web client has really enjoyed it. I hope the "new" version is a an improvement.

You will want to upgrade once it's release for sure. MANY new features.

The Webclient is also a Work In Progress. It may change drastically on each alpha/beta. We expect the Beta to have a more refined look.

While I greatly appreciate the early access to the Alpha versions of 3CX, you may be surprised by how many people do not realize this is an Alpha release (at this time). 3CX needs to make this more clear because we get customers calling us who have mistakenly upgraded their production 3CX to V18 every day.

If you look at the 3CX blog posts, emails, and newsletters there is a lot of talk about V18 "coming soon", and it is very easy to upgrade 3CX from V16 to V18. In my experience, we should see at least a couple of Beta versions before the official release. So, what does "coming soon" mean?

While I agree there should be more sanity checks before upgrading to an Alpha version, that some people are missing this reminds me why we manage these on behalf of our customers.

Well there is a big red "1" on the menu showing there is an update available. Yes the wording does say it's alpha but obviously not everyone reads that. Perhaps 3CX could make a checkmark in settings somewhere for "show me alpha" or "show me beta" releases which is unchecked by default. Or at least hide the update count if it's not a production update. This happens with SBC beta updates as well as I recall.

Completely agree - Alpha release should not be treated the same (in the way they notify customers) as production-ready maintenance releases via the management console.

They are not entirely treated the same way as having "automatically update 3CX" enabled will not install Alpha/Beta releases. However you are right, in terms of notifications via the Management Console it is in fact the same as in you will get the the same red icon in the upper right corner of the MC showing that there is an available update. I do however believe that it is good practice to read before clicking on anything that's about to be installed
