v20 Router Phone Setup How-to?

Has anyone made a how-to in v20 to setup router phones?: All the youtube videos and 3cx docs I can find reference the old v18 way and I've been unable to figure out how to setup a router phone with a fanvil x6u-v2.

I must have missed this somewhere in documentation, but I went ahead and setup a phone to "direct connect" and put dhcp 66 into my dhcp server for that provisioning url as I normally do, and rebooted the phone and it came up and seems to have configured itself as the router phone and it's ip shows up as "local ip via SBC Fanvil X6U-V2 (102)" . Kinda cool I guess.

Is it possible to have multiple SBC's behind the same public ip? I'm thinking not, but just wanted to ask. I'm wondering since I have a client with about 40 phones in a school and most of them are v2 x6u's.

Note it has to be the first phone for an extension and you can only have one per extension, otherwise it assumes you already have one and doesn't offer the choice.

I see you can have multiple SBC's, but can you have multiple SBC's under the same network behind the same firewall? Also how do you specify which phone goes to which SBC?

Yes you can have multiple SBCs on the same network and behind the same firewall. If a router phone, it always uses itself. If a regular phone, you can pick which SBC you want to provision the phone against.

Look for the "Routing device" dropdown on a non-router phone.

Ah I see that now. Cool! That'll save that client from having to buy anything unnecessarily.

I'm testing just playing around with how phones work on v20 and noticed this:.

I added a X6U as a X6U-V2 connected directly and it works just fine, but it also adds it as a SBC that never signs on as a SBC (for obvious reasons). Calls work just fine. I deleted it and readded it as an X6U connected locally to demo.mydomain.com and it works just fine as well. No ports to configure like in v18 or below, so I'm betting if I add more phones, eventually it'll get sip registration errors at random, such as if I was to add phones in v18 via stun but all using the same ports, eventually one phone will conflict and give sip registration failed errors.

Weird part is I didn't put in any custom phone template to do this like the v20 documentation says you'd have to. This is a PBX updated from v18 to v20 though so I wonder if that has something to do with it?

STUN wasn't supported in v18 but is less supported (?) in v20. Per other posts you can use STUN but need to create a custom template as you noted. Otherwise an SBC is far easier to deal with. We have one client with I think two phones at a location that predate the router phone so that's our only one using STUN. Since it's a newer phone, we're planning to convert one to a router phone.

The one down side with 40 is that you need 4 router phones and have to keep track of which normal phones are assigned where. Or just install an SBC in a VM.

Correctly done, but Option 66 is not really necessary since we use RPS.

Yes it's possible, but if you have a big office you could also install a local SBC to keep things simpler.

This is not running in STUN mode, its only half working. That being said, even if you enable STUN properly with a custom template, you should still avoid it as it is not supported starting from V20 and its reliability compared to SBC is very spotty.

You can have multiple router phones on your extensions now, glad to say that this is no longer a limitation starting from V20.
