A background on the new Universal Headset Driver

Recently we had to move our headset integration to the WebHID standard. This blog post explains the ins and outs of this new standard.

What is WebHID Universal Headset Integration?

First off, what is it? The WebHID Universal Headset Integration is a standard ...

Does the Desktop App send OFF_HOOK=false repeatedly, every 1 second or so? That would explain my observed issue of being unable to use the headset for other audio, with the integration enabled. (EPOS/Sennheiser)

Thanks,

Hi Nick, since this change you now cannot retrieve a call that has been on hold using the desktop APP. This happens on Jabra 930's and 9450's for definite.

Yes this has been reported on these models. Please notify Jabra also. We don't have these devices and really there should be no difference in behaviour between 930 and 935. Worst case we bring back the old integration temporarily but we really want to stick to this new standard.

Is it possible to read out the call states (OFF_HOOK, RING, MUITE, HOLD) from the command line with the 3CXDesktopApp.exe ?

Looking at your original blog post, just to clarify, any webHID headset should work with the webclient in edge/chrome, but only Plantronics, Jabra, Sennheiser, Yealink in the installed Desktop App version?

Just as an update: We have an update coming on monday that should make some improvements for Jabra, we had a call with them and i we are hopeful that we can resolve quite a few issues together.

Hi John

1st customer that reported this with Jabra Pro 930's has tested the updated client and it now seems to be working as expected.

We still have multiple others that need to test and also need a resolution for Plantronics, would this update possibly fix the Plantronics issues as well?

Thanks

Dan

It should help with the hold/resume issues. But if it doesn't it would be a good idea to contact Poly and find out what causes the issue.

Just to clarify for others too, you should not be using the integration one more than one client at the same time (ie. do not enable integration on 3CX and Teams at the same time).

Hi John

Poly aren't coming back to us regarding these issues, but we will keep trying. Can anybody else that uses Poly pester them as well??

The problem with Teams is that you can't turn off the integration, the Jabra Direct software detects Teams automatically but does not detect 3CX as an installed softphone which I will raise to Jabra now.

Yealink headsets seem to work fine with both Teams and 3CX running, so it can be done. I would say almost all of our customers use Teams alongside 3CX.

Hi John, with Jabra Evolve 40 same problem (Teams + 3CX) also with the updated client
You cannot use both Teams and 3CX integration at the same time though.

If 3CX tells the headset to hangup, the headset will tell everyone (3CX and Teams) that "the call is now ending". So Teams hangs up too.. and vice versa.

I think they have a secret sauce that makes this work. You might notice many models have a UC and Teams button (ie. the WH63) so there's some logic built into it so it can differentiate and keep things separate. I'm not sure all manufacturers have this ability or maybe not all models at least.

The issue of hang up on resume has been resolved on Jabra PRO 930 and other devices. We have confirmed this on many installations. If you continue to have issues with Hangup on resume, contact Jabra. Alternatively open a support ticket and we are happy to forward the issue to Jabra ourselves.

We are in contact with Jabra and in all fairness they are helpful. We are happy to discuss and implement changes put forward by Jabra as long as it remains compatible with all headsets. We will not support or guarantuee interoperability with all Jabra headsets now or in the future. Unless Jabra commits to testing their SDK and headsets with 3CX and fully supporting it.

Most issues above being reported are because you are using Jabra headset on the same PC on both Teams and 3CX. This is not possible. If you want that, you must buy a Yealink headset.

Dear Nick,
Assuming your statement Yealink headsets have the ability to deal with teams + 3CX integration at the same time on the same computer ?

@Gbot@Okam Yes they do and they had to implement specific support so that they know about the two apps on the same computer and the headset handles this. We worked with Yealink on this. Jabra does not have this. (i am sure they can make it and might want to but they have to guarantuee and support it end to end)

ok nice to hear that, but the need of a usb plugged base station remains a big caveat..

So we have decided to bring back the old SDK in the next update. This SDK was not without issues and therefore the integration will be provided as is. Any issues will have to be raised with Jabra. Couple of points to mention:
  1. SDK is Jabra JavaScript SDK - Version 4
  2. There are some known issues in the past as well for the SDK.
  3. Three versions with major API changes last year that require code changes and retesting on our part. it could be that it was just the beginning but if there are major changes frequently going forward we can not guarantuee we will do it each and every time.

Yealink now has DECT models with a USB dongle as well as bluetooth models.
