When i search for information on setting up "Dial By Name" all I see are forum post links, no official documentation.

Can anyone point that out to me?

Dial by name is setup as an option through digital receptionist. if you open a digital receptionist menu you will see the option for call by name.

Thanks, how can I audit which users have completed this?

"On a windows server you can navigate to C:\ProgramData\3CX\Instance1\Data\Ivr\Voicemail\Data and check if a file called self_id_prompt is present in each of the extension folders. The ones that do not have means they have not recorded their message.
In linux the path is /var/lib/3cxpbx/Instance1/Data/Ivr/Voicemail/Data" - YiannisH

Would be nice to have this under extension - 2 columns to show recordings - NAME and DEF GREETING...

Frankly, I don't understand why the system can't locate the person based on the information entered when setting up the extension in the 3CX management console. For example if I setup an extension for "Bill Smith" in 3CX, seems like it should easily be able to find Bill Smith if someone keys in "SMI" on the touchpad.

Why the user has to log in and record a self greeting to make this feature work is beyond me. And the lack of visibility on whether a user has done it or not doesn't help. Furthermore, if an extension is reassigned to a new person (Bill Smith leaves, and Bob Jones takes his extension), I only go into the MGT console and change the name on the extension, but because the old Bill Smith name is recorded, it won't find Bob Jones.

Seems like an easy enough feature to implement to dial by name using the contact info on the extension rather than relying on users to record a self greeting. Not sure why they continue to leave it working this way. So 1990s.

The reason why this is done this way ( I assume) is because doing it the way you want would involve building in a TTS engine into 3CX or having a recording for every single letter/character available in every language 3CX supports to play back situations where you might have more than one match. Otherwise you'd have no audio guidance. I've got no problem with 3CX requiring users to record a self identification message to appear in the directory. I do wish there was an overall status to see what extensions have done the necessary steps. As it stands now you can script something at the OS level or you have to check per extension as the self_id prompt shows up under the manage voicemail greetings.
