Configuring xAI Grok for Transcription
Introduction
This document describes the steps you need to take to allow 3CX to transcribe your calls and voicemails using xAI Grok.
- Voicemail transcription requires a 3CX PRO License.
- Transcription of call recordings requires a 3CX AI license.
Setting Up an xAI Account
If you don’t have an xAI account, you will need to create one, create a team and get an API key. Here are the steps verified as of early 2026, but these may change and you will need to check out the xAI documentation for more information.
- Go to https://console.x.ai and sign in or create a new account.
- On the first visit, complete any onboarding and create your default Team when prompted.
- In the left sidebar, click Billing and add a Payment Method.
- Go to API Keys and click Create API Key.
- Give the key a name (e.g. “3CX Transcription”).
- Optionally you can set Rate limits for your key or restrict access to specific models and endpoints.
- Click Create API Key.
- Copy the key immediately and store it securely (it won't be shown again).
Setting Up Grok in 3CX
- Go to 3CX Admin Console > Integrations > Transcription.
- Select Grok as your transcription engine.
- Paste the API key you copied above on step 8 into the API Key field.
- Enable ‘Stereo Mode’ if desired; Stereo Mode is recommended to provide higher accuracy and diarization.
- Press Save.
- Go to Admin > Departments > [select department] > Options and enable transcription for your department. Once you enable all users, ring groups and queues will follow the department transcription settings.
