Configuring Avaya 9601, 9608G, 9611G, 9621G and 9641G with 3CX
Step 1: Reset Avaya Phone to Factory Settings
Reset the Avaya phone to factory settings.
- Press Menu button and navigate to the “Administration …” menu
- Select and insert the Admin password (default is - 27238)
- Scroll the menu and select “Clear”.
- Press “Clear” again to confirm the action. The phone settings are cleared and the phone will restart.
Step 2: Add DHCP option 242
Avaya phones require a managed DHCP server which relies on DHCP option 242.
- Access your DHCP server, right click on IPv4, and select “Set Predefined Options”
- Click “Add”
- Add the following parameters into the appropriate fields:
- Name - Option 242 (example)
- Data Type - String
- Code - 242
- Description - Avaya provisioning
- Click “OK” to Create a new DHCP Option.
Step 3: Create a DHCP reservation
- Whilst still in your DHCP server, right click on Reservations and select the “New Reservation…”
- Enter the reservation name to identify your phone:
- Reservation Name - Avaya 9611G
- IP address - 10.172.1.232
- MAC address - b0075eb812e9
- Description - Avaya 9611G provisioning
- Click the “Add” button to add the reservation.
- Find the newly added reservation in the Reservations tree, Right click on it and select the “Configure Options…”
- Select Option “242” from the available options list and put the following parameters into the String value field
HTTPDIR=/provisioning/9kb94fwiaf3t/,HTTPPORT=5000,HTTPSRVR=10.172.0.242,SIG=2
Where:
- “/provisioning/9kb94fwiaf3t/” - provisioning path with the secure folder. Note that “9kb94fwiaf3t” is different for each 3CX Installation.
- “5000” - HTTP port of 3CX Phone System. Avaya phones do not provision using HTTPS so make sure you select the HTTP Web port. (Example 80 or 5000)
- “10.172.0.242” - IP address (or FQDN) of 3CX
- “2” - specifies the type of software, 2=SIP
Step 4 - Downloading the Files to Provision your Phone
Note: Avaya phones do not support secure provisioning so you will have to download an HTTP server locally and provision the below files and configuration using that HTTP server or configure them manually.
To provision your Avaya phone 3CX has a set of files you need to download and place in specific locations on your 3CX Server. You will need: (i) the 3CX Avaya template, (ii) the Avaya Firmware and (iii) the 3CX Logo for Avaya. Follow the instructions below to prepare your environment correctly.
- Download the Avaya template from here and place it in the following location:
- Windows: C:\ProgramData\3CX\Instance1\Data\Http\Templates\phones
- Linux: /var/lib/3cxpbx/Instance1/Data/Http/Templates/phones
- Avaya phones require a special firmware package. Download the package from here, and extract the contents to:
- Windows:
C:\ProgramData\3CX\Instance1\Data\Http\Interface\provisioning\secure_folder - Linux: /var/lib/3cxpbx/Instance1/Data/Http/Interface/provisioning/secure_folder
Note: Phones running on H323 Firmware must be converted to SIP prior to provisioning.
- Download the logos from here and extract the files into the logos folder:
- Windows: C:\ProgramData\3CX\Instance1\Data\Http\Interface\provisioning\secure_folder\logo
- Linux:/var/lib/3cxpbx/Instance1/Data/Http/Interface/provisioning/secure_folder/logo
Step 5: Create Extensions
- Login to the 3CX Admin Console, “Users” > “Add User”
- In the “IP Phone” tab for your new extension you MUST ensure that the extension number and the Auth ID are EQUAL. This is something that needs to be done for an Avaya phone to work otherwise the phone will not register.
- TIP: When you configure the password, enter a password that contains numbers only, for example 122221. This will help for easier login.
- Power up the Avaya phone. Phone will boot, get all the information from the DHCP server, download all the files and register to 3CX.
- When the phone boots up, you will be presented with a login screen asking you for:
- Login: Here you will enter the extension number - in this example 014
- Password: Enter the password you configured in the 3CX Admin console
Limitations and known issues
The following limitations apply to these phones:
- Extension number and Authentication ID must be the same.
- Phone books are not supported.
- Phone features like Alert info, DND, BLF, Remote reboot and reprovisioning, DST - will work only with an Avaya PBX.
- Can be provisioned only as local extensions without support for STUN or SBC.
- For any models marked as EOL, see Support Procedures.
