Hi,

I have a fax machine connected to an SPA112 and can fax directly from the machine, however, unfortunately, inbound faxes cannot be received as the ext does not ring.

I have unplugged the fax and plugged a handset into the ATA and rang the extension and it is dead.

I am using ext 8800 which is one of the predefined fax extensions in 3CX

I have a send fax plugged into another ext 8801 and it does not work either.

I am unable to use the internal 8888 fax server as the faxes received are garbled.

Hi ,
did you try to use 3CX Fax server feature ?

Hi,
please make sure that transfer rule in extension settings allow incoming call for more than the default 20sec before transfer to voicemail or whatever setting you put. Sometimes 20 sec is not enough, we usually set this at 40sec minimum.
Be sure that this extension status is set as available all the time, not going another status depending of general schedule or whatever.

Yes, no success with the fax server as the pages received are partially corrupted.

Hi Clément, I am not sure you mean so this setting?
The internal FAX extension 8800 does not appear to have any settings that are configurable.
See attached.

I don't think the issue is timeout as the phone does not ring even once?

Hi,

we use SPA 112 with some clients too and we never use this kind of settings. SPA 112 is not supported by 3CX.
We configure SPA 112 as a normal extension and we configure it manually by configuring directly into SPA 112 browser config page. Use the quick setup on first SPA 112 page and it works great. I suggest you to do the same.
That's why I was speaking about transfer rule and so on.

Thanks Clément,

I will create a standard extension and try this. So you use the SPA112 default settings and only make the changes you have shown?

Clément, do you only use T38 with your setup?

Are you trying with T.38 or G711 Pass-through ?

Personally I would just run a PCAP trace and see what is going on, however running a supported gateway would be the better option: https://www.3cx.com/voip-gateways/

Sorry I dont know much about faxes and never change any settings on the fax itself, dont know for the T38. I just plug SPA 112 after analogic fax out and connect SPA 112 on the lan or vlan as 3CX. Always works so far.
About configuration, just create an extension for the fax, dont configure any phone on it, use the password in first page (phone password) in spa 112 quick setup.

"Are you trying with T.38 or G711 Pass-through ? "

Hi eddv, I am not sure sorry. I simply have a SIP line connected to 3CX and ATA on ext 8800 and a fax plugged into the ATA. I have selected the "G7.11 to T38 fallback" option.

If you run a PCAP trace you can see what is being used. You can also check the setting on the Generic Gateway settings on 3CX.

FYI for T.38 FAX to work the provider must also support T.38.

OK, I now have this working. I tried a new ATA and the phone range so I performed a factory reset on my ATA and upgraded the firmware and it is now working on ext 8800.

Now I need a few days of testing to assess the quality of the faxes received.

Thanks for everyone's help.

If you are testing quality, then you can try testing with T.38 and G711 P-T. I think you are not understanding these settings as with an up-supported gateway you will not get the "FAX transmission mode" field as seen here: https://www.3cx.com/voip-gateways/patton-smartnode-sn4112-fxs/

What was the other ATA you tested ? you may want to try that one if a supported model or set it manually on the Cisco.

Also check the baud rate of your machine and alter if required.
