I am testing a GXP2160 with our internal 3CX system, mostly for curiosity's sake. However, the phone will not provision. Ever.

PBX is 16.0.0.1375
Phone is GXP2160
Firmware is 1.0.9.127
Phone and PBX are on the same subnet.
I have numerous Yealink phones on the same system that just work.

PBX sees the phone in the "Phone" provisioning panel. I can assign it to an extension from there. But nothing happens on the phone.
I can attempt to manually provision the phone from the Phone GUI. Nothing happens on the phone.
I can attempt to force reprovision from the menus on the phone screen. Nothing happens on the phone.
I can log into Phone GUI - everything looks fine on the Upgrade and Provisioning tab. Provision URL is present (without the http part), and the http button is selected.

The PBX never shows anything in the logs that I can find that indicates the phone is even trying to request provisioning.

I've done a crawl over the forums and nothing I've found has had an effect.

Anyone have any thoughts as to how I can begin diagnosing this issue? I don't know if it's the phone, the PBX or something in between.

Check your blacklist or even better, whitelist your local LAN. Confirm you can download a config file via browser from a PC on the same network. Then run wireshark and reboot the phone to see if it attempts any communication with 3CX.

The IP of the phone is not blacklisted.
If I go to the provisioning link to request the CFG file using the format below, I get a 404.

http://<ipaddress>:5000/provisioning/<RandomProvisioningFolder>/<MacAddress>.cfg

More information: if I create a "fake" phone provisioned against an extension as a yealink with a mac of something like 111111111111, I can get a config file. If I delete that, then create another phone but as a grandstream GXP2160 with that same mac, and request the same file with a browser, I get a 404. It looks like a template generation problem. The Grandstream template exists, however.

That's not the correct Grandstream format. Grandstream is cfg<MACADDRESS>.xml I believe.

Just confirmed that is the format. You can always check the 3CX templates for the config format:

<deviceconfig filename="cfg%%mac_address%%.xml"><![CDATA[<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>

Gotcha. The XML config file does download from the browser. Looks like a phone problem or network issue, then?

Your first step would be to upgrade the PBX to the release version and try again. If the issue persists then you will probably need to run a packet capture to see where is issue is. Since other phones provision in the same local LAN then i do think the network is an issue. You can also try the manual method outlined here: https://www.3cx.com/sip-phones/manually-provision-supported-grandstream-gxp/

Thanks for the reply. PBX is now on release. Also followed the manual procedure already. I'm going to chalk this up to a bad Grandstream phone. No surprise there. I'll try a completely different phone first. If I get the same result, then I'll do packet capture, etc.

One last thing, have you factory reset the phone and verified that you have the most recent "approved" firmware? If not do that as well.

Factory Reset: yes.
Approved firmware: yes.

Hi ecr,

If possible, try to clear the IP of the phone a from your ARP table and try to get another IP address.

Also if STUN phones can reach your PBX (or a PBX you have access to use), try to assign it as a STUN phone and see if it will at least reach the point where it asks for a user/pass (might take a couple of minutes after factory reset)

Im having a similar issue we picked up 25 2140s , 15 2170s and 10 fanvil x2 for a small call center. we can do a VPN but we have a new SBC. we dropped in the fanvil phones they showed up we assigned them and they rebooted with firmware everything is good.

The grandstreams no luck, they show up in the SBC, i can assign it to an extension, the config url matches but nothing happens. i updated to the 3cx firmware and flipped to STUN, i got the RPS registered for the phone but it didnt work. we have so far tried on 6 phones. I cant imagine 6 of 25 phones are bad?

@benf To confirm when you say similar issue you have already updated the phones to the required firmware before attempting to provision?

Yes, I did both. the phones showed up through the SBC, i attempted to add a couple and nothing happened (mind you the config url is filled out). so i factory reset, again nothing. so i went and grabbed the 3cx firmware, factory reset, again, nothing. so i removed it from the SBC, i set it up as STUN, i get the RPS request success, i factory reset, and reboot and nothing.

Ok so I would make sure the public IP you are attempting to provision from is not blacklisted first of all. Then confirm you can retrieve the config file from a PC on the same network as the phones. If that checks out then factory reset a phone and try to manually provision it. Instead of assigning via the PnP method and SBC, just add the mac address to an extension, select SBC and then put in the SBC IP address. Then web into the phone and paste the URL into the provisioning path (removing the https:// part).

So the 9 Fanvil X2 are working on this network segment without issue, using the same SBC . i am just staging so all the phones are in a poe switch on an isolated network. I did try copy/pasting the url, and the url was already in there. I have 28 of these phones, not one of them work. 13 2140's and 15 2170's. they are currently of various firmwares only because the couple i put 3cx firmware didnt make a difference. Although I dont know 100% if the 3cx firmware is on them at this stage since the version did not change.

How can i test the url? i have done it before and just get page not found.

Okay so you are onto something I went and figured out how to pull the config, and you are right so i was able to pull the fanvil.cfg files but when i went to grab one for the grandstream nothing. that would be in line with what I am getting which is i get the config url but nothing happens and the account is blank.

I had a similar issue when attempting to provision several Grandstream GXP 2135 phones. We factory reset, downloaded the newest firmware from Grandstream and nothing. I was about to give up until I used the firmware from 3CX here: https://www.3cx.com/support/phone-firmwares/

After using the above firmware I was able to provision the Grandstream phones via a 3CX SBC or using STUN. This worked for me and might help someone else.

I am using the latest Linux SBC and version 16.
