Handset with Night Vision Preserving Display

Hi,

I'm looking for a 3CX-approved handset that has a night mode, whereby the user can push a button (or it could be automatic based on ambient light) and the display dims and / or turns red to preserve night vision.

This is for use on the bridges of ships so it's an important feature.

Normal power-saving features where the display dims after a set period doesn't really cut it because the display will brighten again on an incoming call or key press, destroying night vision which isn't acceptable.

Non 3CX approved VoIP handsets might be acceptable if I can't find approved ones.

Can anyone suggest a product I can look into for this please?

Oh boy, most phones will indeed brighten again on incoming calls. Yealinks have power saving features based on time alone, and DND would be used to prevent it from waking up.

In your case, I guess the phones must remain reachable?

Yes Frederick, need to remain reachable. I wonder if there is a phone with an API? Then we could write something that will dim the bridge phones in response to a button press on the panel or something. Prefer not to go there if I don't have to.

A very specific application, something most phone manufacturers don't consider when designing their sets.. If you are talking about a desk phone, as opposed to something wireless, then, if there were a set with a colour display, that can be set to red characters on a black background, a flip down filter (polarized/directional, or simply dark), over the display, could be deployed at night. Of course if the keys illuminate, then you'd want a phone where the colour, of those, can be set as well.

There must be others that have come up with a solution for this by now, VoIP systems must be quite common on modern ships.

Yes agree with all that. And yes, looking for a phones that can be console-mounted on the dashboard. I suppose being able to adjust brightness would be a common feature for desk phones as well so am hoping to find something that supports that. As long as its dimmable, the red light probably isn't essential. A flip down filter isn't a bad idea.

To a point, but most are designed to be visible in a standard office environment, so the brightness variation will be somewhat limited. Those polarized privacy filters that are sold to go over your laptop screen, will cut the light by a bit, but if rotated 90 degrees from the intended use will cause the display to only be visible if you are (more or less), directly in front of it

Zero 3CX certified products for this use case, and frankly it's probably pretty hard to find even a SIP device that can do this. But considering the proposed environment I'd hope you'd be comfortable enough with 3CX/VoIP/networking in general that using a unsupported device wouldn't be an issue. Otherwise your options are using an ATA with an analog device if one exists.

I've been playing with the Fanvil X4 and can alter the display backgrounds and colors to make it very dark which might work.

After the energy saver timer trigger, backlight dims but remains on. In a very dark room it still looks a bit bright.

The Cisco SIP phones seem to allow the backlight to be switched off in energy saver mode so that might work if I get desperate. Otherwise there is an analogue phone I know of with a dimmable display.

Do you think its worth my contacting Fanvil and asking them if there is any way to have the backlight switch off completely on the energy saver timer, or if they would consider adding it into the new FW update? Any good contacts at Fanvil?

What would be perfect is the ability to configure one of the DSS buttons to toggle the backlight off.

It doesn't hurt to ask but unless you were doing some considerable volume I wouldn't hole my breath.

Insert a red lighting gel behind the screen lens.

You no longer have to worry about the software sending the wrong type of light out, and you don't really need to worry much about any further customization.
