Yea I saw that above 16 SC (so the 32SC band) it no longer offers hosting, it's only that the blog post from 2020 that I linked said free only applied to 20 users, that limit must have been removed?

There was never a limit on users, the only reason users were mentioned was because of the specs of the free machine that was given wouldn't cope with more than that.

As cobaltit said, licensing is based on Sim Calls, but hardware specs of the server need to be based on number of Users.

I'm just setting up our company on 3cx with 50 users, the pricing page suggests 50 users is free for the first year for both licence and hosting, however this page says it's only free for 20 users? Is this page out of date compared to the pricing calculator? Or will my users get an error when we pass 20 active?

As there are quite a few questions here, let me make things clear for you

3CX Licensing

As mentioned, we do not charge by extension, but by simultaneous calls. So for 50 users, you could use a 16SC or a 24SC - depending on how heavy their phone usage is. A 16SC for example allows a maximum of 16 internal and external calls. We recommend 3 users per 1 SC.

Free Licenses

You can enjoy up to 1024SC on our Standard edition for the first year. Our Pro and Enterprise editions are for 4SC licenses, only. You can compare the differences between Standard, Pro, and Enterprise by checking this link out https://www.3cx.com/ordering/pricing/

3CX Hosting

3CX Hosting is free for the first year. If you check the info here https://www.3cx.com/ordering/pricing/hosted-info/ you will find we specify a max. number of users per license size. The reason for this limitation is the size of the machines on our Hosting platform.

it depends only on your users. how often they will call.

There is no limit that I'm aware of. However, depending on the usage of said users, you may run into performance issues.

Ahh, I see, so basically keep an eye on the CPU usage and if we run into a limit, do we then need to pay for hosting to get above the 1 CPU hosting option?

Let me get the details for you but i believe you need to scale up your license in the customer portal and then we will schedule it. Requirement is that you are using the machine with enough users to now waste resources for nothing....

Hosting with 3CX is Free for the first year for keys up to 32SC.
You can have a 4SC Hosted key and then go and try to upgrade it to a 1024, Portal will not allow you.
You will see this :



Also if you do the Free Upgrade before you install it to our Hosting, when you will try to deploy it to your Hosting you will get this message :




And this happens because of machine types we provide in our platform.


Now, if you have a 4SC Hosted by 3CX and you upgrade the key to let's say 24, or 32 SC, then yes the same day at night time ( local machine time and out of your office hours ) we will power off your machine for 5 min and we will resize it to the correct specs which match the key you have upgraded your PBX to, check here : https://www.3cx.com/ordering/pricing/hosted-info/

Hi Nick, thank you, I understand the process now and really appreciate your time answering, it's an amazing offering, even for a year, currently we're still in our first week of getting everyone comfortable using it so we're only seeing 1 or 2 calls at a time and it's not touching the CPU really, so far everyone is really impressed though! I was just investigating the process so I can react quickly when everyone suddenly starts using it, I'll hold off for now but thanks again,

Ahhhhh, so I initially talked to a local company about 3CX to get a start and a demo etc, they registered my company-name for the demo, I then asked to manage it myself which they were fine with and helpful and offered to remain my partner though offering no actual services, just the option to in future, as I was going to manage it myself, it would appear because their name is in that box I don't see the options to change the instance, it says I should contact them so I'd not poked about with it
