I'm a new user and currently only using 3CX for learning and hoping to apply what I'm learning to my work.

I purchased a couple of Cisco 7960 phones and have them factory reset using the procedure I found online.

Now it's looking for a configuration file.

I've been able to determine it wants that file from the gateway IP address of my home network.

I read the instructions on this site and downloaded the cisco-79xx.zip. I'm running 3CX as a VM under Windows Server 2019.

I placed this file in its own directory and specified that directory in PumpKIN as indicated in the TFTP server setup instructions.

I'm running PumpKIN on the main server host. I have it set to "listen" on the gateway IP address of my home network.

The phone does not seem to be picking up the config file and PumpKIN isn't answering any requests.

The phone does have an IP address if I press the settings button and have a look at the various screens, however, there does not seem to be a way to modify these.

Any help getting this working would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Glen and welcome to 3CX!

The legacy guide for those models is here and provided "as-is": https://www.3cx.com/sip-phones/cisco-7940g-7960g/

Please keep in mind that these are end-of-life legacy phones, which we no longer provide support for nor recommend for using with 3CX. It is unknown if they will still work with modern versions of 3CX (keep in mind those models are over a decade old).

In case you are interested, here is a list of currently supported phones which are way easier to configure plug and play style straight out of the box, and are confirmed to work with modern versions of 3CX https://www.3cx.com/sip-phones/

Be certain that the file name that the set is trying to download, matches the one in Pumpkin. Also be certain that Pumpkin is set to look in the directory in which the file actually resides.

You can't have VM on one IP 'listen' on the gateway IP. Networking doesn't work that way. You need to configure whatever is doing DHCP on your network to tell the phone where to find the files via TFTP. This is covered under Step 4 of the guide @JohnS_3CX linked. I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to learn and apply to work but unless your work specifically has Cisco 7960's and 3CX, you probably want to start with supported phones.
