I would like to set up a SIP trunk where when used for an outbound call, a specific caller ID number will be displayed rather than the Outbound Caller ID of the extension making the call. I've tried playing with the Outbound Parameters to no avail and added a number to the Outbound Caller ID hoping it would be the number displayed at the remote party's phone.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Well it's likely one of three things:

- Your provider is forcing caller-id to your trunk number because they don't let you pass CID for a number you don't own (Clip No Screening)
- Your outbound rule is not routing the call out the trunk with the caller-id you want
- You haven't removed the CID on the extension which would override the trunk CID

You may also be using an unsupported provider which is why you're having to modify templates in the first place.

So first make sure you have no CID set on the extension and the correct CID set on your trunk. Then makes sure your call is going out the correct trunk (your wording makes it seem like you have more than one). Then check with your provider to see what they are seeing and if they will pass whatever you are sending.

Isn't there a setting in Outbound Parameters that would override the Extension CID? This is for 911 purposes. I read that it can but it doesn't show the setting. In fact, I can't seem to find any comprehensive documentation on Outbound Parameter setting for SIP Trunks.

I figured it out.

In the SIP Trunk Outbound Parameters, set "From: User Part" to ""OutboundLineID" Outbound Line Caller ID taken from Outbound caller ID setting in management console".

This will override the extensions CID with the SIP Trunk's Caller ID. Now I can assign the trunk to a group of extensions and to a specific DID which I can register with E911. I will create one for each location. It's also important to train your users that this will only work with desk phones that are in the location and not with soft phones or mobile phone clients when outside of the location.

Awesome sauce! :-)
