New interoperability model: 3CX Tested, VoIP Tested & Community Tested.

V20 Update 10 gives more choice and freedom when selecting SIP Trunk Providers. Instead of a provider depending on direct 3CX testing before becoming available, providers can now complete the required 3CX interoperability testing themselves and submit their results for review. Community-submitted templates can also be made available directly in the product.

The result is a more flexible model that can bring a wider range of compatible SIP trunk options to 3CX users faster, while at the same time making it clear who tested each provider and where configuration support comes from. The new categories are visible in the 3CX Phone System from V20 Update 10, with corresponding changes also being rolled out across the 3CX website. Read on to learn more about what’s changed.

Flexibility When Choosing 3CX SIP Trunk Providers

Businesses operate across different countries, carriers and telecom environments. A SIP trunk provider that works well for one deployment may not be the right choice for another.

With the new interoperability model, 3CX can offer a broader range of provider options without removing the distinction between trunks tested directly by 3CX and those tested through another route. Providers and templates are now placed into three clear categories:

  • 3CX Tested: Providers tested directly by 3CX. These providers have a 3CX configuration guide and are listed both in the 3CX Phone System and on the 3CX website.
  • VoIP Provider Tested: Providers that complete the required 3CX interoperability testing and submit their test results for review. Once approved, they can be listed in the 3CX Phone System and on the 3CX website. The provider is responsible for ongoing support, including configuration and technical issues.
  • Community: Templates submitted or requested by 3CX Partners, end users or members of the 3CX Community. These are available within the 3CX Phone System but are not listed in the main SIP Trunk Provider directories on the 3CX website.

3CX SMB systems continue to work only with approved 3CX Tested templates.

Test a SIP Trunk Provider Directly From 3CX

You can also test a SIP trunk provider yourself from within the 3CX interface using the 3CX VoIP Provider Checker. The checker guides you through inbound and outbound call tests and shows the results as soon as the test is complete, including the status of the trunk, inbound calls, outbound calls and the overall test. If something is wrong, you can see warnings or errors, correct the configuration and test again.

This gives you more freedom to validate a provider yourself and identify compatibility or configuration issues. The checker specifically reports Trunk, Inbound, Outbound and Overall results and flags warnings/errors that can then be corrected and retested.

Know Exactly What SIP Trunk Provider to Select

More choice is useful only if you can understand what that choice means. If you select 3CX Tested, you know the provider has been tested directly by 3CX. If you select VoIP Provider Tested, you know the provider completed the required interoperability process and submitted its results for review. A Community entry clearly identifies a template originating from 3CX Forum.

This gives a person responsible for setting up the SIP Trunk the information needed to balance testing level, provider availability, regional requirements and support..

A Community provider can also move to VoIP Provider Tested if the provider later completes the required interoperability process.

Faster Approval Route for SIP Trunk Providers

Previously, approving a new SIP Trunk Provider required involvement from both the provider and 3CX. With VoIP Provider Tested, SIP trunk providers can complete the required interoperability tests themselves using the 3CX testing process making the process for both parties more efficient and less time consuming.

This creates a more scalable route for providers to demonstrate compatibility without requiring every trunk to be tested directly by 3CX. For customers that can mean more provider options, including regional providers.

New SIP Trunk Provider Categories in V20 Update 10

The new provider categories are being introduced in the 3CX Phone System with V20 Update 10. We are also updating the SIP Trunk Provider listings and related pages across our websites, so that the website reflects the same terminology used in the product.

For SIP trunk providers interested in being listed as VoIP Provider Tested, the new VoIP / SIP Trunk Interop process explains the requirements, testing procedure and submission steps. Providers are required to meet the applicable SIP trunk requirements, complete interoperability testing and submit their results and configuration information for review.
