We have a PBX setup with 8 analog linens going into an FXO gateway. We had recommended against this setup (we advised to get sip trunks), but they didn't listen. Either way i'm wondering if its possible, since we are using all 8 analog ports on the gateway, to setup a few extra DID's for some of the extensions. I'm thinking it isn't since each analog line is its own number. But I wanted to check and be sure.

Well if the assumption is you continue with FXO then no, not with the current gateway. You can add a 2nd gateway for that although you'd still be limited to 1 call on that DID. But I'd push again for SIP since you already have a gateway in place, and most peoples reluctance to go SIP/VoIP has to do with quality or reliability. Since you already have 8 POTS lines this seems to be the perfect time to 'try' VoIP so they can see the benefits.

It all depends on the gateway. A DID number can normally be entered against each line. It does not have to be the actual PSTN phone number assigned to the line, it just has to be a number, that you will then use to create a DID rule. The rule will then determine the destination. And...I'm assuming that there is no provider "hunting" set on these lines.

Ideally you would create a separate trunk for each line in 3CX and the gateway, to allow the outbound calls from each DID extension, to use only their PSTN line.

If you choose to do that, you may want to add an additional gateway, or SIP trunks (preferably) for all other outbound calls, as well as inbound NOT to a DID number. The SIP trunks could then be used, in the future, for migration of the DIDs.

Thank you both for the replies, that pretty much confirms what I already knew, its not going to be possible with their setup. I am using all 8 of those lines to provide 8 simultaneous call paths, if I take any out of the hunt group to dedicate to being used as a DID for someone's extensions then they'll run the risk of people getting busy signals during the busier times, so SIP trunks it is, they'll just need to get with the times.

Find a SIP provider you like, start with a couple of DIDs, then port others over, one at a time if you like, as everyone feels "comfortable".

We have a SIP provider we partner with we have a few clients on. Normally when i do a port over to a new service i forward calls to their main number and any others to temp numbers and then submit porting requests for any numbers that need to be transferred over, then just let them know that there may be a bit of down time on the day the porting happens while the calls are switched, i know the switch happens right away at the time its scheduled for, but allowing for down time lets me do the last bit of clean up with the freedom to reboot or change stuff around if necessary. But i think they are going to go with their ISP who will put in an SBC, which should work just as well.
