Quick backstory here, this is a new PBX build and it's my first 3cx switch (still working through the training). If all goes well, we'll use it as our production PBX.

I've been testing configs on a batch of diferent phones, and I'm running into a problem with the first grandstream I've provisioned... Its a GXP1620, provisioning was a bit more straight forward than the digiums, but it keeps telling me my firmware is unsupported. The phone has v1.0.4.82 on it from the reseller.

I went ahead and kicked off a firmware update from within the 3cx web panel, and the phone reboots... but it just comes back up with 1.0.4.82 on it... to be sure, the phone has a few quirks I'm hoping this firmware update will correct... the ghost calls are killing me. So I REALLY want to install this update... I have read several other posts of people in similar situation, most close out with "it's working now" and no explanation as to what they did. Is there some trick to this? or do I just have to wait?

BTW: yes, I followed this guide... and this one... This one too!

Hello @narrington and welcome to the 3CX community.

How is the phone provisioned? It is local to the PBX or remote? If remote are you using STUN or SBC?
Also are you running V15.5 SP6 or V16 RC1?

Hi @YiannisH_3CX! I like what you've done with the place!

The phone is configured locally, but we WILL eventually be installing a remote site and the phones there will connect over a VPN (edgerouters configured for IPsec site-to-site tunnels). Looking over the performance cost of IPsec and VoIP and SBCs it just doesn't seem necessary to use either an SBC or STUN... Just explaining in case your response is affected by that possible setup.

as for version, looks like I'm on 15.5.15502.6. I dont see anything about Service Pack revision...

We're avoiding v16 for now as this hopefully will become the production PBX... needs that stability!

UPDATE: I'm also recieving a significant number of ghost calls on this phone. JUST this phone (Its presently the only grandstream, the other two test phones are digium D60 and D65), and I know it's not coming from an external connection because it happens in the absence of an internet connection on a closed network with the phones, the 3CX, and a simple edgeswitch. If I disconnect the PBX, the ghost-calls stop. I'm really hoping this is just some quirk of the unsupported firmware.

That phone firmware is really low. You have to step upgrade from v1.0.4.x

2. IMPORTANT UPGRADING NOTES:

- If the GXP21xx phone is on firmware 1.0.4.x or lower versions, please upgrade to 1.0.7.97 first.

The HTTP upgrading path for firmware 1.0.7.97 is:

http://firmware.grandstream.com/gxp21xx/1_0_7_97

Here are the links to download 1.0.7.97 firmware packages:

http://firmware.grandstream.com/Release_GXP2160_1.0.7.97.zip

http://firmware.grandstream.com/Release_GXP2170_1.0.7.97.zip

- If the GXP21xx phone is on firmware 1.0.7.x and can't upgrade to 1.0.9.x directly, please upgrade to 1.0.8.x first, and then upgrade to 1.0.9.x.

The HTTP upgrading path for firmware 1.0.8.56 is:

http://firmware.grandstream.com/gxp21xx/1_0_8_56

Here are the links to download 1.0.8.56 firmware packages:

http://firmware.grandstream.com/Release_GXP2135_1.0.8.56.zip

I have tried to manually upgrade the firmware... and I have run into a brick wall... the documentation referrs to a option to upgrade firmware in the web interface... there is no such option. I thouhgt I was looking in the wrong place untill a set of grandstream 2170s arrived... the 2170s came with the same firmware revision as the 1620... but THEY have the upgrade firmware option under maintenance>upgrade and provisioning.

I believe I'm dead in the water on this one, unless someone has something else to try.

So on newer versions of the firmware and depending on the model you can upload the firmware via the web interface. On the rest you have to put them to the URL. So in your case you need to point the 2160 to http://firmware.grandstream.com/gxp21xx/1_0_7_97 in the firmware upgrade field, press 'Save/Apply' and then be patient as there is no progress indicator. Somewhere between 5-30 minutes you'll see it upgrading or it will ask you to reboot. From that firmware you should be able to go straight to the 3CX one although the Grandstream page mentions sometimes you need to go to 1.0.8.56 so it might be worth doing that step manually as well. Then I'd factory reset the phone before trying to provision

Assuming your firmware is a pretty new version.

After you login to the Supported grand stream phone, grab the 3CX provided firmware. Go to Maintenance----->Upgrade and Provisioning-----> Click on the top option start. The GUI will pop up a window to drag and drop firmware. Drag it to the box and you will see the name of the firmware click start. Wait for it to finish.

HA!!! I did nothing!!! Just signed in this morning (having done nothing over the weekend) and the switch reports the phone is on the latest supported revision firmware... so for anyone having this issue... here's your walkthrough:

1> Google the crap out of the issue.
2> Perform every step suggested, even the ones that seem odd.
3> Sacrifice a fatted calf
4> Give up and check back in three days.

Now how do I mark this thread "resolved"?
