Hello,

I am trying to automatically provision a Yealink T28 upon a factory reset, without any luck.
Our 3cx system version is 15.5.6354.2.

The phone gets the 3cx server's IP address via the right DHCP Options and then requests <MAC>.cfg file (via HTTP), but 3cx responds with 404 Not Found.

I had assigned the Yealink's MAC under a specific extension. Removed that, added that back in to that extension, but still no luck.
I also manually upgraded the Yealink to 2.73.0.60, still without any luck.

It seems that the 3cx server does not create the <MAC>.cfg file for the phone.

One last potentially useful info:
Yealink reaches 3cx via 3cx's LAN interface, but the Yealink resides in a different subnet.

Looking forward to your feedback.

Regards,
George

Are you able to ping the phone's IP from the PBX?

Absolutely.
Like mentioned above, the phone establishes a communication with 3cx.
It asks (HTTP GET) for the <MAC>.cfg file, and 3cx responds with a 404 Not Found.
The issue is that 3cx does not seem to create a provisioning (.cfg) file for the Yealink.

Regards,
George

Im assuming youre provisioning via LAN?

Are you using custom templates?

Hello @kieferschild
The answer to your first question is found in my initial post:
"Yealink reaches 3cx via 3cx's LAN interface, but the Yealink resides in a different subnet."
As for your 2nd question, I am using the default template for our 3cx version.

Thank you,
George

So if you try to pull the config file via the browser on a computer from the same subnet does it work for you? Also, what are your subnets? 3CX only allows HTTP access from RFC1918 IP ranges so if you are doing something silly like using something outside of that for your Yealink subnet it won't work. You would need to use HTTPS

IP is not a suspect.
Again, the Yealink sends an HTTP request (GET = give me my.cfg file) which reaches the server and the server sends an HTTP response (404 = no .cfg file for you exists here) which reaches back to the Phone.

Regards,
George

Great, can you try with a browser now?

Just tried and as expected, got the exact same results (confirmed both via Chrome: "This page can't be found") and via Wireshark (HTTP 404 Not Found).

EDIT: I assume we can all agree that 3cx does not create the necessary <MAC>.cfg file for T28P.

Some thoughts I have on this:
1. The Yealinks T28P are end of life. Could this affect 3cx anyhow?
2. The Yealink resides in a different subnet, and once booting it sends a multicast SIP SUBSCRIBE to IP address 224.0.1.75 (PnP provisioning attempt), which of course never reaches the remote 3cx since it resides in a different subnet. Please note that both the Yealink and 3cx have routing connectivity between one another, as they reside in the same MPLS network. However, this does not cover the 224.0.1.75 multicast address scenario which is not routed.
3. After the SIP Multicast (PnP attempt) fails, the Yealink sends the HTTP request for the <MAC>.cfg file. I have removed the MAC address from the 3cx extension where I had initially assigned it, and re-created it from scratch. Even tried to assign that MAC to another extension. Still no luck.

So, any ideas why 3cx will not create the <MAC>.cfg file?

Thank you,
George

Have you tried HTTPS ?

If you goto the Phones tab and click +Config does it show the config file?

Doh. I just realized you're on SP2. Upgrade and try again.

And the phone model shouldn't matter. The EOL'd phones just don't support certain features but the config file generation is simply a function of having a template. You can put the same mac address and call it a T46 or anything else. 3CX doesn't know the difference.

Thank you both for your feedback.

@craigreilly HTTPS made no difference, as expected. I got the 404 not found via browser. It is not the protocol (http or https or ftp or...) it is the fact that 3cx has never created the file in order to serve it. Since I see some doubts on this, kindly note that the Yealink asks for file y000000000000.cfg before it asks for its own <MAC>.cfg file. And 3cx is happy to serve the y000000000000.cfg file to the Yealink, but never fetches the <MAC>.cfg file. So, 3cx does actually have a generic provisioning file, but it does not have a MAC-specific config file.

@cobaltit we are in the process of planning our 3cx servers upgrade. You think that this will resolve the issue? Honestly, I do not see how. 3cx should be able to create a <MAC>.cfg file when we assign that MAC to an extension, either on 15 SP2 or on version 12. I am afraid there is something else here, which might be minor, but I am still missing.

George

Hello @George Tsionos

Please note that the PBX will create the provisioning file upon request and will not store in the provisioning folder. I would recommend trying to download the file from a browser that is in the same subnet as the PBX and see if this is a network issue.
Also To download the file through a browser you need to use the correct format. You will need to copy the provisioning link from the phone provisioning tab and paste it into a browser, then append the mac address of the phone and the .cfg suffic.
For example http://IP_Of_PBX:5000/provisioning/xxxxxxxxxxxx/MAC_Addr.cfg

Hello @YiannisH_3CX
Thank you for your response.

I removed the MAC address from the extension.
Then created a new extension and assigned the Yealink's MAC to that new ext.
Then rebooted the Yealink of the remote office and it asked for the <MAC>.cfg file.
It received a HTTP 404 from our 3cx server.

Then I tried to ask our 3cx for the <MAC>.cfg file from the local LAN. I navigated from Chrome to the following address:
http://3cx_IP_address:5000/provisioning/xxxxxyyyyy/00156512345.cfg

just to receive a 404 Not Found response.
HTTPS and port 5001 bring the exact same results.

George

I'm not 100% certain but given that you are having a very unusual experience it's definitely worth a shot. Can you try adding a fake MAC address just to make sure there isn't something bugged with that specific MAC address? Something like 0123456789ab and then see if you can retrieve the config file?

Good point @cobaltit , I had not thought that the MAC itself might be an issue.
I entered another extension, that had no phone assigned to it. Went under Phone Provisioning - - > Add - - > Selected the Yealink T28 default template, entered the dummy MAC address 001565123456 and left the rest to the default. Clicked OK.
Then opened a browser from a PC within the exact same subnet and asked for http://3cx_IP_address:5000/provisioning/xxxxyyyy/001565123456.cfg
The response was again, 404 Not Found.

If we take a look at the provisioning guide for Yealinks T2x provided by 3cx , it never mentions that the Yealinks are provisioned via HTTP. It only mentions PnP. See here https://www.3cx.com/sip-phones/yealink-t20p-t22p-t26p-t28p/
PnP is a multicast SIP SUBSCRIBE request that includes the Yealink's MAC in the RURI, as confirmed via a trace.
So, @YiannisH_3CX , you said that 3cx will create the configuration file upon request. Did you mean that it creates that file ONLY upon a SIP SUBSCRIBE multicast request, i.e. is a PnP attempt from the yealink? Or does an HTTP GET count as a request, as well?

Regards,
George

@George Tsionos

No, it has nothing to do with any of that. In prior versions 3CX used to write static files to the hard drive. In v15 the files are dynamically generated so when the request comes in it streams the file vs serving a static file. At this point short of restarting services/rebooting the server and upgrading I don't have any other options for you. I suppose the T28 template could be bugged so you can try using a fake MAC address (or the real one) with a different template to see if the issue persists as well.

I restarted all the services (including Configuration Server).
Things got even worse: The Yealink now receives a 404 Not Found for the generic configuration file as well, i.e. y000000000000.cfg.
I tried other templates, for T26 and T27.
Still nothing. Same goes for asking the files via a web browser of course.
It is getting frustrating...
Any ideas would be more than welcome.

Regards,
George

You aren't low on available disk space are you? Checks stops some functions when there is less than 500MB free. Otherwise upgrading is the only option I see. If you opened a ticket with 3CX that would be their response.

No, disk space is not an issue but your input is very much appreciated.
@YiannisH_3CX any other suggestions? The upgrade will take place shortly.
My plan was to test Yealink's provisioning process before I upgrade the 3cx server, so that I avoid any surprises with the new version's templates, firmware, etc.
I guess I'll never know until I upgrade the server, which is certainly not a proactive way to move forward.

Regards,
George
