Connect ChatGPT or Claude to the 3CX MCP Server

Introduction

This document explains how to set up the integration between your AI (in this example, we will look at using a chat agent) and your PBX.

This allows your chat agent to query about most information on the PBX (for example: asking for a list of extensions or active calls). This functionality can be a great companion tool for the Admin Console.

Setup Requirements

Before you begin, a PBX administrator must prepare the following:

  • Your 3CX PBX must be publicly reachable and on port 443.
  • If your PBX is NOT running on port 443, it will NOT be possible to connect with OpenAI (Web), Claude (Web), or Claude (Desktop); you will be restricted to using OpenAI (Desktop), OpenAI (Terminal), or Claude (Terminal).
  • A 3CX user who is allowed to authenticate the application and use the required tools.
  • Your preferred AI client/agent; for example, ChatGPT or Claude.

Setting up ChatGPT

  • Access your OpenAI ChatGPT account and login to your account.

  • On the ChatGPT page, click your profile at the bottom of the sidebar and click the Settings option

  • Enable Developer mode
  • If the option is hidden or cannot be enabled, you may belong to an enterprise workspace. Contact your administrator to enable permissions for creating custom MCP connectors.

  • Retrieve the MCP URL for your PBX from Admin > Integrations > MCP Clients > Add MCP Client within your 3CX Admin Console.
  • Visit the OpenAI ChatGPT plugin management page.

  • Click the + icon.

  • Provide the following details:
  • Icon
  • Name
  • Description
  • Connection URL

  • If you are using ChatGPT Desktop, the appropriate area to put the URL is under the "Streamable HTTP" tab.

  • Provide the correct setup credentials & authorisations
  • Authentication (The authentication type must be OAuth).
  • Click the I understand and want to continue checkbox.
  • Click the Create button to proceed.

  • You will be prompted to log in via the 3CX portal when prompted to authorize the integration.

  • Confirm the additional tool and runtime settings and options presented by the AI client.

  • Open a fresh conversation and test the functionality with a query such as: "How many extensions does my PBX have".

Setting up Claude

  • Access your Claude account and login to your account.

  • Navigate to Customize -> Connectors and click the Add -> Add custom connector menu option.

  • Retrieve the MCP URL for your PBX from Admin > Integrations > MCP Clients > Add MCP Client within your 3CX Admin Console.

  • Name your connector and add the 3CX MCP Server endpoint URL; click the Add button

  • Confirm the additional tool and runtime settings and options presented by the AI client.

  • Open a fresh conversation and test the functionality with a query such as: "How many extensions does my PBX have".

Permissions & Limits

The AI operations made via the MCP utilize your 3CX account credentials, meaning it inherits your existing role and permissions. It can only perform actions or access information that you are already authorized to handle directly in 3CX.

This means that attempting to prompt and use functionalities you don’t have access to will return errors and that this is expected behavior. See 3CX MCP Tools and Permission Levels for more information on permissions.

Enabling the addition of plugins Organization Wide

Making your connector available for use across your organization is also possible in the same manner described above through the workspace-related areas of your AI provider’s UI.

To manage organizational deployments, publishing rights, and admin-level restrictions, please refer to the official documentation provided by the platform providers:
