Hello All,

I am new to 3CX, I am looking into using it as a replacement to our hosted VoIP we currently have. Some basic information on the setup is below, if further information is needed let me know.

3cx server: Debian VM
Phone: Polycom VVX 300 running UC Software version 5.7.1.2205, upgraded from 5.4 as part of troubleshooting
SIP Provider: sip.us (only for testing, will switch to spectrum (formerly known as time warner) if I can get this to work)
Provision method: Manual - that is I entered the server manually through the web interface of the phone

So when I first started this I got the phone to join to the server using the old UCS, I hadn't rebooted it in a while because after it joined to the 3CX server I started messing with the SIP trunk. When I got that working with inbound and outbound calls I wanted to try messing with the BLF settings to see how it will work for our receptionist, so I setup a BLF button to monitor a dummy extension with no phone on it and rebooted the phone to get it to show up on the screen. After this reboot it wouldn't connect again, it just shows an x next to the my name on the screen and gives the whole "URL calling is disabled" message when trying to use the phone. Here is the steps I have tried so far

Clearing all BLF fields - no change
Re-entering provisioning server through web interface - no change
Upgraded UCS to 5.7.1.2205 (using Polycom automatic updater on phone web interface) - no change, but side note, after doing the update the phone started boot looping and getting stuck at "updating initial configuration" or something like that, I had to yank the power cord to get it stop and boot up. i confirmed through the web interface it did upgrade but still no change
Reset to factory defaults and try provisioning again - Got stuck at "Please Wait", had to yank the power and then it started looping at "updating initial configuration..." had to yank the power again and then booted up to the now familiar x's on the screen.

At this point I'm at a loss, I'm not entirely sure why it was working before and now it will no longer connect, and i'm beginning to fear Polycom's firmware bricked the phone. I put a snippet of the logs below, I looked around and didn't see much information about them, at least not pertaining to 3CX and Polycom. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

**UPDATE** - I was able to factory reset the phone by interrupting the boot. After it booted clean I verified it had the right firmware and it did, I re-entered the provisioning server but still no go. Whats odd though is that it clearly pulls some information from the server as it changes the display, updates the time and date, and changes the phone's admin password, but it keeps popping up with "line unregistered" after it boots and it says "URL Calling Disabled" when trying to use the phone.

**UPDATE** - I downgraded the firmware to 5.6.0 as I read that is what is supported by 3CX. But now it won't provision at all. When i check the log it looks like its ignoring the provisioning server that I specified but I don't understand why. Pretty discouraging that its getting worse rather than better, this looked so promising at first. A snippet of the logs is below. You'll see that its using username VVX300 when its supposed to be using trtvoice.

**UPDATE** - aaaaaaaaaand it randomly decided to join, but still have the same x's...still nothing in the polycom logs as to why. I turned on verbose logging in 3cx, it gave me this but i'm not sure what to make of it, it has loopback mentioned but not the phones ip or extension...i'm going to go punch something repeatedly now....

So when I came in this morning I disabled the firewall on the ESXI host that 3CX is on, i rebooted the phone and it worked!....That is until I decided to give it another reboot to make sure it still worked and it started doing the same thing, x's on the screen "line unregistered" upon boot up, etc...

I have also noticed that after the initial boot, it no longer updates the configuration, I tested this by entering a new administrator password on 3CX for the phone and rebooted the phone, the password stayed the same.

Crazy randomness, I cannot figure out why this thing won't work. So at about 10:00 AM it randomly joined to the server, I was ablet o make calls and everything. The change I did was setup a dhcp reservation with option 66 and then set the username and password on the phone thorugh Web UI and also set the DHCP option on the phone to only look at option 66 for provisioning. after this it worked....once. AFter a reboot it started doing the same thing. i can't figure out the pattern or why it randomly decides it wants to work on one of the 8 million reboots i've done, here is a line from the lag on the last reboot, prtty much the same... if anyone can jump in and help i would greatly appreciate it

Got something else, still doesn't really mean anythign to me, i looked up the error code 505, how in the world can the sip protcol be unsupported if the thing was working before....at a loss here...hope someone can help

During one of my many reboots it randomly decided to connect, no configuration changes were made, nothing is different, it just decided it wanted to, it will most likely mess upon reboot as usual, but below is a log entry of when its working, maybe the log can be compared with the non-working log.

Feels like i might be getting closer to establishing some kind of pattern. When I went to lunch I left the phone on in the working state, right after lunch I pulled the power cable and it rebooted and was working. I did again, just incase the time inbetween restarts was the issue and still it worked when it booted up. So i decided to test it using the "restart" function under basic settings, and this time when it booted it had the x's again. I pulled the power plug again and when it rebooted it came up with the x's again. there must be something here that i am not understanding, its almost like when the phone connects to the 3cx server, it just breaks it for a while, then, if the are stars aligned, and you've been a good little boy this Christmas, it magically starts to work, right up until it doesn't. I did a couple of packet captures on the 3cx server when rebooting it upto x's, both reboot and restart show the same thing, pretty much no traffic between the phone and the 3cx server. except for DNS traffic to resolve the ntp server, but thats going to the DNS server VM that shares the same NIC, which would be why its showing up in that pcap. This to me points to an issue with the phone, but I don't get why its so random. Any insight whatsoever at this point would be appreciated.

Had another random working boot up, phone was going good for a while, left it on for about an hour and then rebooted it, both unplugging and restarting had the same result....stupid little x's and line unregistered. I'm actually surprised I haven't gotten a reply yet, I didn't think something like this would stump the entire community....And as i was typing this it randomly decided to come up after doing restart, decided to do another restart to see what would happen and back to line unregistered..........joy.......

So new development! I feel like I'm talking to myself at this point, but i suppose at the very least this provides a log? Lol, I don't know, I'm guessing this thread will get taken down soon due to lack of response anyhow, anyways I have figured out that if I leave the phone on, then reboot the server the phone will register on its own, if i restart the phone though with the server on, i get the same line unregistered issue. Makes me think that when the polycom joins the server something breaks, crashes, or otherwise stops working. I don't know whats going on, there are no stopped services, there is nothing on the ip blacklist (which wouldn't make any sense anyways). All i know is that 3CX seems to be a one trick pony when its booted up. The phone can join once successfully and then it gets diarrhea until the next reboot.

Hello @TagleRock

First of all what version PBX are running? You can see the exact build number on the dashboard under the information column, next to the licence.
Is the local or remote? Is the phone in the same network as the server?
Windows or Linux?
Sorry if any of the requested information is provided above and i missed it.

Please try following the guide to provision the phone through 3CX. Ensure that you are running the correct firmware and you have the support files to the correct location.

Good Morning and thanks for the reply! Some of the information you requested was in the first post, some wasn't, i'll put it all below.

PBX Version: 15.5.10244.4
Local, yes it is in the same network
Linux

I have followed both guides to manually provision the phones and I have tried DHCP option 66. Both have the same result. The firmware on the phone right now is 5.6.0. I started off with 5.4 (can't remember the exact version number). I had originally upgraded 5.4 to 5.7 (latest one from polycom) this made no change so I went to 5.6.0, this is the specific version mentioned in the first guide you posted. You mention making sure the support files are in the correct location, could you elaborate on this such as files that need to be there, location where the files should be etc..? (I will google this as well to see if I can locate it) I would imagine if the support files were not in the correct location the phone wouldn't work at all, but as I said I'm new to 3CX so I'm not sure.

Also I tried two other things that i'm not sure if I mentioned. I moved the 3CX VM to its own dedicated NIC and tried using a different switch incase there were network issues but the behavior was the same.

I just read through this article: https://www.3cx.com/blog/docs/v15-finding-provisioning-files/

It says that v15 of 3CX produces provisioning files on the fly each time the phone registers. I wonder if its not generating the provisioning file for some reason. Gonna see if I can put a static copy of the provisioning file in the provisioning folder.

I manually put a copy of the <MAC>.cfg file in /var/libe/3cxpbx/instance1/data/http/interface/provisioning/**UID** but that didn't make a difference, i did some more reading on v15 and i'm not sure if putting a static provisioning file is even possible.

**EDIT** - well scratch that idea, from what I've read, and a user tested this, 3CX v15 ignores any files you put there or even that are left over from an old install.

The support files mentioned contain the firmware for these phones as well as localisation files. Its step 1 in the provisioning guide.
As you have mentioned a static file will not work as it will be ignored by the server. You can however check if you can pull the file manually from the server. If you can then a phone is the same network as you should be able as well.
To do so copy the provisioning link from the extension settings and paste it in browser.
then append that the mac address of the phone and .cfg
It should look like this: http://<IP_address>:5000/provisioning/<random_folder><MAC>.cfg

Check if that works. If that does work then your next step will be to run a capture on the server while the phone restarts. Look for http GET requests and see if there are any errors.

Question: Are you able to provision other phones to the PBX or is the issue only present with this phone model?

I will go back over the provisioning guide to see if I missed something.

I can manually pull the configuration file, thats actually what I did earlier when I tried putting it into the provisioning folder to see if that would help. I actually just ran a capture for the third time, but I didn't see any HTTP GET requests, however I was looking at the server's IP and the phone's IP only, i'll comb the whole pcap to see if i can find anything

Unfortunately I don't have any hardware phones I can test of a different model, all of our phones in the office are VVX 300's. However I was able to setup the 3CX client on my computer with no issues, it is able to make and receive calls, the BLF works, etc...

**EDIT** - I just checked the pcap I took earlier during a restart and there is no HTTP traffic at all, in fact there is no traffic from or to the phone. I took another one a minute or two ago and its the same thing, no traffic to or from the phone's IP. The only traffic I see from the 3CX server is TCP, IPA, and RSL packets between my computer and the server.
