Connect your AI client to 3CX to query PBX data, generate reports and perform permitted actions.
The introduction of the 3CX MCP Server marks a major leap forward in AI-driven unified communications management. By pairing conversational AI with precise, role-based controls, 3CX gives administrators a faster and smarter way to oversee their PBX environment.
The 3CX MCP Server connects your PBX to supported AI clients such as ChatGPT and Claude. In this blog, we look at what problem it solves, how you can query PBX data, generate reports and perform supported actions, and how access is controlled through existing 3CX permissions.
Read on to learn how it works and how to get started.
What Problem Does the MCP Server Solve?
As business communication needs grow, administrative tasks and system diagnostics can consume valuable time. The 3CX MCP Server establishes a standardized, secure, and permission-aware integration path between your PBX and external AI clients. Key benefits include:
- Conversational Control: Perform queries and supported administrative actions directly inside ChatGPT or Claude.
- Instant Insights: Retrieve system logs, queue statuses, call recordings, and inventory details in seconds.
- Seamless Security: The integration utilizes OAuth authentication and strictly enforces your existing role-based user permissions, preventing unauthorized access.
Query, Report & Perform Supported Actions
Ask Your PBX in Natural Language
Once connected, you can ask your AI client for information available to your 3CX user. For example, you can:
- Check active calls and queue status
- Search recordings and voicemails
- Review PBX logs and system information
- Find extensions, contacts, DIDs or SIP trunks
- Generate reports from PBX data
- Perform supported actions, such as logging agents in or out of queues, assigning DIDs or managing active calls
You could simply ask: “How many extensions does my PBX have?” The AI client uses the available MCP tools to retrieve the information from 3CX.
Turn PBX Data Into Useful Information
The 3CX MCP Server can also help with more advanced workflows. Managers can use available PBX data to create weekly management summaries, queue and agent reports, common-issue reports or call summaries.
Call transcripts can also be reviewed to identify recurring customer questions and create structured Markdown content for 3CX AI Agent Knowledge Sources. This reduces the time spent collecting information from different parts of the PBX before it can be reviewed or reused.
Control and Connect the 3CX MCP Server
Access Follows Existing 3CX Permissions
The 3CX MCP Server is built with multi-layered governance to keep your data safe. The MCP Server uses OAuth authentication and follows the permissions of the connected 3CX user. The AI client can only access information and actions available to that account. Supported AI clients can also provide tool-level controls:
- Always allow: Run the tool when requested
- Needs approval: Ask for confirmation before running it
- Deny: Do not allow the tool to run
- Safe Read-Only Queries: Database operations through the Query tool are strictly limited to read-only SELECT statements to guarantee database integrity
For tools that change or delete PBX data, Needs approval or Deny gives Admins more control over what the AI client can do.
Turn Call Recordings into Reusable AI Knowledge
Managers can leverage the MCP Server to transform transcripts of call recordings into reusable knowledge bases through a structured workflow:
- Search the recordings or transcripts the user is permitted to access
- Identify useful and recurring customer questions
- Generate a structured Markdown knowledge document
- Review and approve the generated content.
- Add the document to the knowledge available to a 3CX AI Agent
- Repeat the process periodically to keep the knowledge current
Generate Reports for Managers
Utilize MCP-connected AI apps to analyze queues, agents, recordings, and departments available via their existing 3CX permissions. This data can be automatically synthesized into various report types, including:
- Weekly management summaries
- Queue and agent-status reports
- Common-issue reports
- Call and recording summaries
- Incident reports
How to Set Up the 3CX MCP Server
- Go to Admin > Integrations > MCP Clients
- Copy the MCP URL
- Add the connection to your supported AI client using OAuth
- Sign in with the required 3CX user account
- Review tool permissions and test the connection
